Roger William Bates passed away, unexpectedly, Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Southeastern Ohio Medical Center in Cambridge.
He was born July 13, 1941 and lived in the New Concord area until he moved to Cardinal Place, in Cambridge, on April 4, 2019.
He graduated from New Concord High School in 1959. For many years, he was employed by the East Muskingum School District in the maintenance department. Roger was an enthusiastic supporter of anything with the name “Little Muskies” attached. He attended most of the musical programs and special events but the sports department activities were “Number 1” on his list. Many of the students at the high school will remember his leadership at pep rally’s when he did his usual TEAM cheer. He enjoyed traveling with the team and being on the sidelines at the games. The school recognized his many contributions with special awards through the years. The Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan State Spartans were also high on his list of “great teams”.
In addition to his school activities, he found time to be involved with the New Concord Fire Department and the College Drive Presbyterian Church. Roger was a friend of many and very proud of his family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Velva House Bates, sisters Dorothy and Evelyn, brothers Harold (Mary), James (Elizabeth) and Everett and many nephews and nieces including Steven Bates of Maryland.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Laura Mae Bates of New Concord and several nieces and nephews. In the immediate area are Randall (Joyce) Bates, Jon (Mary) Bates, Barbara Bates and Walter (Mary) Bates. Additional family reside out of state.
Farus Funeral Home of New Concord is in charge of arrangements. Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 8, from 4 to 7 pm. The service at 7 pm will be officiated by Keith Taylor.
Private burial at the New Concord Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be sent to College Drive Presbyterian Church, Box 163, New Concord, OH 43762
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff and management of Cardinal Place for the care and kindness given to Roger. He easily accepted it as his home and many of the residents became special friends.
