Terry C. McCown

Terry Clovis McCown, 81, of Westerville, formerly of Ironton, Ohio, died peacefully at home under hospice care on September 28, 2025. He was born February 9, 1944, the youngest child of the late Henry A. and Adrienne Tucker McCown. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Eleanor Brubaker McCown, daughter Terri (David) Hogsten of Virginia Beach, VA; son Mark (Anke) McCown of Ironton; son Benjamin (Angelique) McCown of Westerville; grandchildren Brandon, Connor (Hannah), and Hunter Hogsten of Austin, TX, Mia Hogsten of Richmond, VA; Annika, Marlena, and W. Finn McCown of Ironton; Malcolm, Maia, Ronan, and Madeleine McCown of Westerville; beloved cousins Steve and Carol Wierenga of Ironton; and many nieces and nephews throughout the country.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Kent A. McCown of Columbus, and his siblings David H. McCown of Ironton, Jean McGurk of Spartanville, SC, and Frank J. McCown of Ironton.

A 1962 graduate of Ironton High School, Terry labored as a barber for several years before working until retirement as a chemical operator for USS Chemicals and Aristech.

Known for his combination of hysterical wit and dad jokes, he was relentless until he got you to laugh. He would unabashedly share his opinions on cars, politics, and anything he thought “you ought to do.” Terry loved nature, camping, car shows, and road trips, but most enjoyed his sailing and boating trips with his brothers and other family members, especially while listening to Jimmy Buffett.

Losing his grandmother, mother, and father within a few months at the age of 11, Terry understood the value of family, and held it sacred above all earthly things. He loved his grandchildren deeply, believing they were his greatest contribution in life.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Ironton First Methodist Church on November 29 at 11:00am, with visitation beginning at 10:00.
