Phyllis E. Degarmo

Phyllis Elaine (Elliott) DeGarmo, 93, of Duncan Falls, Ohio passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at her residence.

Phyllis was born November 11, 1930 in Zanesville. She was the only child of Walter “Sandy“ and Juanita (Brook) Elliott.

Raised in the Duncan Falls United Methodist Church for her entire life, she sang in the choir, was a lay reader, and taught many years of Sunday school. Faith was the foundation she built her life on, always referring to herself as a child of God.

Phyllis graduated from Philo high school in 1948. She then attended Ohio University, Athens. Teaching hundreds of students for over 30 years “Mrs.D” as she was called by many students, began her teaching career for Jefferson school, moved on to St Nicholas Elementary, Maysville School District, and was a substitute teacher in Zanesville City Schools among others. She joined the Muskingum County Library system, where she finally retired at 73 years young. Phyllis loved to joke that she helped move the old library, watched electric come into town, and first taught in a one room school house.

Aside from working, Phyllis was a very active member in her community. She was a member of the Ohio State White Shrine Association, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and the Olive Branch Chapter #251 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Phyllis is survived by her son Stewart “Keith” DeGarmo and daughter Heather K. Burton. Grandchildren; Brooke (Bruce) Carpenter, Margo (Richard) Maxwell, Adrienne (Judson)Bradley, Sandy DeGarmo and Nicole Price. She boasted 11 great grandchildren and three great- great granddaughters.

In addition to her parents, Phyllis is proceeded in death by her husband Rowland A. DeGarmo, infant son John DeGarmo, as well as infant twin grandsons, Ryan and Randall Burton.

In keeping with Phyllis‘ wishes a caring cremation will take place. A loving memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 23rd from 4 to 6 PM at the Farus Funeral Home of Duncan Falls. Pastor Karen Osborn will officiate the service.
