Mary Powell

Mary E. Powell, 82 of Zanesville, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2024 at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville.

Mary was born in Zanesville on October 20, 1941.  She is the daughter of the late Ralph and Mildred Kreager Shipps.  She was a lifelong resident of Muskingum County.  She graduated from Philo High School in 1959 and Ohio University and addended MATC and OUZ.  She was a teacher in Franklin Local School District and the Zanesville School District until 1979.  She retired in 2002 from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Zanesville, Muskingum County Genealogy Society, First Families, Pioneer Families and Civil War Families of Muskingum County, and Muskingum Chapter, D.A.R.  She was a volunteer leader for Boy Scouts of American for ten years.  She enjoyed traveling, reading, genealogy, and flower gardening.

Mary is survived by her two sons, Stuart Powell and Kevin Powell both of Zanesville, two grandchildren, Aubrey Powell of Albany, GA and Eric Powell of Zanesville, and several cousins, nieces and friends including Barbara Elkington Langseder of Wurtsboro, NY

In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Powell who passed away July 17, 2001, an infant daughter, her brother, David Shipps of Zanesville and special friend, Judy Spurgeon.

Visitations will be 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at the Farus Funeral Home, 383 Main Street, Duncan Falls, Ohio.  Funeral services will be 11am on Thursday at the funeral home.  Pastor Andrew Wilson will officiate the service.  Mary will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Duncan Falls Cemetery.
