Obituary

Mary Jean Cassady, 89, of Philo, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at The Oaks at Northpointe and under the care of Shriver’s Hospice.

Mary Jean was born in Philo on April 22, 1936, the daughter of the late Charles S. and Ruth E. (Ribble) Seyerle.

She devoted more than 50 years of her life to nursing, working at Bethesda Hospital, Newark Health Care Center, and Rambo Memorial Health Care. She also previously worked for Elder-Beerman. She retired in 2014 after a long and caring career serving others.

Mary Jean was a lifelong member of Stovertown Lutheran Church and a member of the Stovertown Grange for over 50 years. She was a 1954 graduate of Philo High School and a 1958 graduate of the Bethesda School of Nursing. Continuing her education later in life, she earned a nursing management degree in 1998 from the College of Mount St. Joseph.

She was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Philo Electrics, and she especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. Mary Jean also found joy in playing bingo and spending time with friends in her card club.

She is survived by her son, Donald (Rhonda) Cassady; grandchildren, Eric (Mary) Cassady, Nick (Rachel) Cassady, Tyler (Sheridan) Cassady, Taylor (Travis) DeVault, Brody (Kaci) Searls, and Jordon Searls; great-grandchildren, Camryn, Carsyn, Cora, Raylan, Luke, Claire, Navie, Brayden, Kali, Anthony, Brynlee and one on the way; one great-great-granddaughter, Jourdyn; and her sister, Janet Slack; her sister-in-law, Sandy Seyerle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Cyndy Harris; her granddaughter, Angie Shipley; her brother, Bob Seyerle; her sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Peter Zieg.
