Larry L. Shepherd, 66, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2021, while at Marietta Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born in Pennsboro, West Virginia, on December 4, 1954. He is the son of the late Grant E. and Ruth (McIntire) Shepherd.
Larry proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a corpsman stationed at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center.
Larry graduated with the class of 1973 from Pennsboro High School where he played football, baseball, basketball and was a member of the marching band. He attended Glenville State College where he met his wife Rachel and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He obtained a degree in Criminal Justice from WVUP. After graduation he worked for Eureka Pipeline (Pennzoil). In 1994 Larry began a career as a hazardous materials transporter and received many safety awards.
Larry was an avid golfer, loved music and was a lifelong West Virginia Mountaineer fan. He always looked forward to Saturday night dates with his wife. His grandchildren brought him so much happiness and a smile to his face. He was so proud of his son and the man he became.
Larry is survived by his wife Rachel (Morris) Shepherd, who he married on November 4th 1978; his son Grant Shepherd (Lara); his grandchildren Silas and Judah; He is also survived by a special cousin Jenny Nichols (Max), as well as Bryan Jones (Lisa), Chris Delaney & Aaron Nichols (Amber), longtime friend Paul Zinn, and many others. He also leaves behind a constant companion his Golden Retriever, Sadie.
In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his infant daughter Amanda, brothers Bob Brown, Billy Brown and Mike Shepherd, and his cousin Karen Duley.
A special thanks to the nursing staff at Davita, Dr Hamirani, Amber Knowlton PA-C Parkersburg VA Clinic, Father Gene Sheppard and Dr. Dennis with Amedisys Hospice. He was also very grateful for the loving care he received from his daughter-in-law Lara Shepherd.
In keeping with his wishes, a caring cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley.
