Kenon E. Mitchell

March 15, 1924 — October 28, 2015

Kenon Eugene (Ken) Mitchell, 91, of Philo, passed away at his daughter’s home on Wednesday, October 28, 2015.

Ken was born in Stovertown, Ohio on March 15, 1924, the son of Kenon and Gertrude Mitchell.  Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.  He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stovertown for much of his life.

Ken graduated from Belle Valley High School (Noble County) in 1942.  In 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and proudly served in Europe during World War II.  After his discharge in January of 1946, Ken married the love of his life, Mary Carol Shattuck, on October 27, 1946, and their marriage lasted nearly 69 years until her death on August 22, 2015.

Ken was well known as a certified public accountant in the Zanesville area, first as one of the partners in the firm of Graham, Mitchell and Associates and later with the firm of McLain, Hill, Rugg and Associates, Inc.  He loved being an accountant and continued working until the age of 86 when his failing eyesight brought about his final retirement.  His clients were very special to him and he was more than just an accountant to most of them.

Throughout his professional career, Ken had a deep desire to help others and serve the community.  This kept him involved in several organizations including Eastside Ministry, Kiwanis and the American Red Cross.

Education was important to Ken.  He was always a staunch supporter of the Franklin Local School District and faithfully attended every program, assembly, concert and athletic event that any of his children (or the children of any of his friends) were involved in.

His accounting background served him well when his interest in and support of the Franklin Local School District ultimately led to a seat on the Franklin Local School District Board of Education.

For many years after their five children graduated from Philo, Ken and Carol could always be found cheering for Philo Electrics athletic teams of all kinds.

One of his greatest honors was his induction into the Franklin Local School District Citizens Wall of Honor which recognizes residents of the school district who have distinguished themselves by actions, accomplishments, and deeds and have exemplified the educational and moral values most honored by the Franklin Local School District.

Ken is survived by his children, Alan (Debbie) of New Albany, Paul (Geraldine) of Sandy Hook, CT, Sandy (Steve) McIntire of Dresden, Pat (Gary) Alexander of Columbus and Carol (Bob) McEntyre of Rocky Ford, CO; his grandchildren, Ben, Mark, Alison, James, Shawn, Matt, Nathan, Bryan, Ian and Heather; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dollie Henderson of Eustis, FL and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Ken was preceded in death by his sister, Glenna Davis.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at the Farus Funeral Home, 383 Main St., Duncan Falls, OH  43734.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stovertown, OH with Pastor Al Laese officiating.  Ken will be laid to rest in the Stovertown Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Ken’s name to the Stovertown St. John’s Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 361, Philo, OH  43771.
