Obituary

John W. Patterson, 94 of New Concord, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Genesis Hospital.

He was born on October 31, 1931, in Washington, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Hugh and Sarah (Mustard) Patterson.

John proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was very passionate and patriotic about his beloved country. He worked as a furnace operator at the Vanadium then Cambridge Shield Alloy Plant until his retirement.

He was a fifty-seven year member of the Bloomfield United Presbyterian Church, as well as the Cambridge VFW and the United Steel Workers. When he was not working or busy with his community, John was tending to the family farm and raising beef cattle. He was an avid outdoorsman that loved coon and pheasant hunting. He also enjoyed assisting the Amish and driving them around, traveling, hosting the Buckeye Tours with his late wife, Margaret, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn (Jerry) Dunn of Ocala, FL; two sons, Gerald “Buck” (Carol) Patterson of New Concord and John Patterson of Warsaw; seven grandchildren, Angela (Joe) Swingle, Mark (Vicki) Patterson, Kristina Parrett, Elizabeth Dayton, Tiffany Patterson, Tessa Patterson, and Shyanna Patterson; nine-great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Louise Severance and Mary Margaret “Peg” McQuain; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret J. Patterson, whom he married on June 13, 1954, and who passed away on October 16, 2012; as well as his siblings, Jim Patterson, Dick Patterson, Sam Patterson, Ed Patterson, Harry Patterson, Sara “Sally” Patterson, and an infant brother William Patterson.

Visitations for John will be held from 4 PM to 7 PM on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Farus Funeral Home of New Concord. Visitations will also take place from 10 AM to 11 AM the following day, prior to the funeral service at 11 AM. Pastor Tim Pollock and Pastor Roger Morrow will officiate the service. John will be laid to rest beside Margaret at the Guernsey County Memory Gardens with full military honors provided by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
