Janet S. Stults

Janet Stults, 90, passed away peacefully at her home at Primrose Retirement Community in Zanesville, Ohio, on September 22, 2025.

Born May 19, 1935, in Niagara Falls, New York, to William and Emma Campbell, Jan attended LaSalle High School, where she was active in sports, music, and theatre, all while babysitting and excelling academically. She graduated from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, with a degree in mathematics, completing co-op jobs at major research and actuarial institutions across the country. It was at Antioch that she met her lifelong partner, Taylor Stults, and welcomed twin sons, David and Eric.

While Taylor pursued graduate studies at the University of Missouri, Jan worked at the Stephens College nursery school in Columbia, Missouri, before the birth of their third son, Evan. They eventually settled in New Concord, Ohio, where Taylor taught history at Muskingum College (now University). Jan taught math at all grade levels before assuming several leadership roles at Muskingum, including Assistant to the Academic Dean, Director of the January Term, Director of the Summer Institute of European Studies in Switzerland, and Registrar. She also served as President of the National Association of January Term Colleges and Universities.

Jan sang in community and church choirs and was deeply involved in civic life. She served as President of the League of Women Voters, was the first President of the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra board, Treasurer of the Zanesville Concert Association Foundation, and was honored with a leadership award by the Village of New Concord.

She and Taylor traveled extensively, visiting every U.S. state, all but one Canadian province, and over 30 countries.

Jan was preceded in death by her brothers Bill and Dick Campbell. She is survived by her husband Taylor, sister-in-law Jane Campbell, sons David (Kathy), Eric, and Evan (Joe), grandson Adam (Erin), step-grandsons Jessee (Jorden) and Logan Jaep, and great-grandchildren Turner, Jones, Knox, and Keegan.

Jan brought a spark to all who knew her, and her interest in others shone clearly throughout her long, vibrant life. In her memory, sing to a child, read a book, or speak to a stranger. Interment at the Columbarium at Muskingum University will take place at a later date. The family thanks the staff at the Primrose Retirement Community for their loving support and care.
