James L. "Chappy" Chappelear

May 8, 1968 — January 17, 2025

Norwich

James Lee "Chappy" Chappelear, 56, of Norwich Ohio, passed away January 17, 2025 surrounded by family and friends at home after a short, courageous battle with stage 4 lung cancer. Although born in Dayton on May 8, 1968, Chappy called Norwich, Ohio home.  In Norwich, Chappy & his family made many friends and wonderful memories.  Chappy, always the life of the party, was known for hosting great parties and late-night shenanigans. He was also known as a kind, giving man and would help anyone. He was a loyal friend who would show up whenever needed. As a result, Chappy found his life rich with friendship and was loved by all that were lucky enough to know him. Chappy loved all things mechanical and built his career using his hands.  He was employed as a skilled auto mechanic and worked for over 20 years at Priority Automotive.  Most recently, he was employed at Gutridge, expanding his knowledge and skills in a new trade. Chappy was always a dedicated employee, showing up on time and ready to get the job done. Chappy is preceded in death by his parents, Oran "Gene" and Dolores Chappelear, and brother, William "Willy" Chappelear.  He is survived by his son, Dustin of Hurricane, Utah, and the brothers that he handpicked for himself over the years:  Denny (Sarah) Jameson, Chris (Amanda) Jameson, Mike (Andrea) Lucas, Rob Reaves, and Luke Lucas. Chappy is also survived by Jen Graves Chappelear, his former wife and caretaker, and Michelle Frith, with whom Chappy co-parented their son. His family already misses him tremendously. At Chappy’s request, a "wing-ding" Celebration of Life will take place when the weather is warmer, so that those who loved him can celebrate outside around a fire, listening to good music and having a beverage together. Special note:  Chappy was a member of Moose Lodge #867 in Zanesville where he enjoyed the time spent with his friends.  Moose Lodge #867 honored Chappy on January 18th with a benefit, which he referred to as “my party”.  Chappy’s family would like to extend a sincere heartfelt thank you to the Moose Lodge for hosting as well as those who donated items and attended. In the days leading up to his death, Chappy was aware of the outpouring of love and support by those in the community and was touched. Although he was not able to attend in person, those who were there would agree that he was certainly there in spirit.
