Gene A. Coleman

October 8, 1937 — August 25, 2025

Zanesville

Gene A. Coleman, 87, of Zanesville, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 25, 2025, at Genesis Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was born October 8, 1937, in Zanesville, a son of the late Joseph B. and Bessie Mae (Bleakney) Coleman.

Gene served proudly in the United States Army in the late 1950s. While stationed in Shreveport, Louisiana, he met the love of his life, Emma (Greene) Coleman. The two were united in marriage in 1959 in Mitchell, Nebraska, and went on to share 63 wonderful years together. Their marriage was a true partnership, rooted in faith, love, and devotion to family.

In his working years, Gene began with the Omar Baking Company, where he found joy in delivering fresh baked goods to friends in the Adamsville and Frazeysburg communities. He later spent the majority of his career with Sears, Roebuck and Company, where he enjoyed serving customers and helping families make their homes more comfortable.

Gene’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished hunting and fishing trips with his father, long talks about old cars with his eldest son, and countless hours spent cheering on his granddaughters in their high school sporting events. A man of quiet faith, Gene lived his life by example—showing kindness, integrity, and love in both simple times and the milestones of life, while also lightening moments for those around him with his jokes and spirited sense of humor.

Surviving are his children, Jeff (Nancy) Coleman of Cambridge; Steve Coleman of Zanesville; and Kim (Bob) Tatman of Roseville; granddaughters, Taylor (Aidan) Tatman of Blacklick and Callie (Dawson) Degnan of Summerville, South Carolina; his sister, Karen “Susie” (Wilbur “Bud”) Johnson; sisters-in-law Shirley Brown and Luanna Woolsey; brother-in-law Richard (Sandra) Greene; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Gene was welcomed into Heaven by his beloved wife, Emma; his sisters, Millie McCall, Bernadette Starr, and Ruth Cody; his brother, Charles Coleman; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence and Merle (Royle) Greene; his brothers-in-law, Robert and Michael Greene; and his sister-in-law, Bonnie Kelley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Muskingum Residentials, Inc., PO Box 2415, Zanesville, OH 43702, in memory of Gene Coleman.

Per Gene’s wishes, no calling hours will be observed. Private graveside services will take place at Duncan Falls Cemetery. Farus Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
