Due to weather, the services will be held at the Farus Funeral Home of New Concord at 11, with a committal service taking place immediately thereafter at New Concord cemetery.
Bernice E. McKirahan passed away on December 31st, 2016 while in the care of Grant Hospital following an accident; she was 93 years old. She was born at home in New Concord, Ohio on June 8, 1923 to Herbert and Hazel (Waddell) Tom. Bernice was a loving woman who cherished her family, and enjoyed helping people and students whenever she could. She was a lifelong member of the New Concord United Methodist Church, belonged to the Eastern Stars, and sang with the Cambridge Singers. She enjoyed cooking, and watching Ohio State football games; as well as doing crafts. She worked at John Glenn High School for many years, and eventually became the Head Cook.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula (Jim) Young, the daughter of her heart, her granddaughter, Traci Graham, her daughter-in-law, Peggy McKirahan, her grandchildren, Staci Heller, Gwyn Griffiths, Brian Kenney, Jeff McKirahan, Shannon Edwards, and Jeremiah Young, as well as 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her brothers, Dale Tom, Gene Tom, Russell Tom, and Joe Tom. She will be deeply missed by her church family, numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and former co-workers. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Harry McKirahan, Sr., her son, Harry “Scoop” McKirahan, her daughter, Leila (Lela) McKirahan, her sister, Danna Horton, her brother, Richard Tom, and her uncles, Ellis Duitch, and Mike Waddell.
A graveside service for Bernice will be held on Thursday, January 5th at the New Concord Cemetery at 11am, with friends and family invited to visit the family at the Farus Funeral Home of New Concord at 9:30 AM. Rev. Karen Graham will officiate the services. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made in the name of Bernice E. McKirahan to the New Concord United Methodist Church, 20 E High St, New Concord, OH 43762, or the Cambridge Singers, PO BOX 842, Cambridge, OH 43725.
