Richard J. “Rick” Hughes, II (54) of New Concord passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the Beckett House after a short battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).  He faced his diseases with grace and courage.  Rick was born February 11, 1963 to Dick and Marti (McLees) Hughes.  He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying the sport of hunting, particularly deer, with his father and Uncle Bob; and in later years with his son.  He also enjoyed fishing with his children.  He was a fan of all sports, following the Cleveland sports teams, the Cincinnati Reds, and The Ohio State Buckeyes.  He played baseball throughout his early teens and was a starter on the John Glenn Golf Team.

Rick was an employee of Colgate-Palmolive and a volunteer EMT with the New Concord Fire Dept.  He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, #867, where he also volunteered many hours serving as Sergeant at Arms, Jr. Governor, and Rookie of the year; both at local and state levels.  He shared a love of reading with his mom, especially the novels of Stephan King.  He loved teaching his son Billiards and poker, and also playing cards, Bingo, board games, and practical jokes with his friends and family.  He had a special affinity and love for all animals, particularly dogs and horses; showing the latter during his 4-H years and volunteering as Ring Master at the Muskingum County Fair.  Rick was always first at his parent’s barn to welcome newborn foals.

He leaves behind to mourn him his parents, his beloved children, daughter, Whitney Hughes, son, Dallas Hughes, his sister Heidi Hughes, his unborn grandson, several aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends, and his loving companion, Kathi Culp.  Rick was predeceased by both sets of grandparents, and aunt, and three uncles.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Animal Shelter of Muskingum County, 1430 Newark Rd, Zanesville, OH 43701.  In accordance with his wishes a cremation has taken place.

Friends and family may visit the Farus Funeral Home of New Concord on Sunday, October 15th, 2017 from 2 to 5PM.  A private graveside service will be held at a future date.  The family owes a special thanks to the staff of the Interim Hospice Care of the Beckett House for their kindness and gentle care in Rick’s final days.
