Miss Hanes was my sixth grade teacher. She was my favorite teacher. She and I and several other girls would have discussions about life when we were on the playground. Once, I lost the money I was supposed to turn in for a school activity. Knowing that I sometimes babysat, and suspecting that my family didn't have the means to replace it, she loaned me the money and had me pay her back with my babysitter earnings. When I quite unexpectedly started my period for the first time in sixth grade, Miss Hanes was who I turned to for help. Because of her, and her words of encouragement to me, I graduated with honors from both CHS and Good Samaritan School of Nursing. I retired from Good Sam after a 38 yr. career in surgery, have been married for 43 years and have two sons. Sadly, I was not able to locate Miss Hanes before her passing. One of my friends said he saw her at times in New Concord and that he would tell her I was trying to get in touch. He had not seen her since then. So, I will pass on to you, her family, the knowledge that she made a difference in this student's life and I am grateful to have had her as a teacher and friend.
