E. Ruth McElwee Holmes

E. Ruth “McElwee” Holmes, 91, of Cambridge, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, September 15, 2019 while in the care of Genesis Hospital. 

Ruth was born in Jefferson Township on October 24, 1927.  She is the daughter of the late Adaraundas Judson “AJ” and Elizabeth (Hunnell) McElwee.  Ruth enjoyed bowling, fishing, crossword puzzles, reading historical romance novels and playing cards; and she loved spending time with her family.  She and her husband owned and operated the Dairy Duchess in New Concord for over thirty years along with her in-laws, Bob and Alda Matchett, she belonged to the Euchre Club, a bowling league, and she was a member of the New Concord Church of Christ.

Ruth is survived by her sons, Marvin (Leanne) Holmes, David Ray Holmes, her two grandchildren, Ross Judson (Camille Tinnin) Holmes and Zachary Richard (Kaylen) Holmes, her sister, Helen McElwee Gregg, her sisters-in-law, Ruth McElwee and Betty Finlaw Smith, a brother-in-law, John Holmes and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lester who passed away November 15, 1980.

Friends and family are welcome to attend calling hours for Ruth from 5 to 8 pm on Friday, September 20, 2019 at the Farus Funeral Home of New Concord.  Funeral services will take place at 11 am on Saturday at the Church of Christ, 13333 Maple Ln, New Concord, OH with Terry Townsend officiating.  Ruth will be laid to rest beside her husband in the New Concord Cemetery.
