Jerry M. Bates

July 3, 1932 ~ January 17, 2018 (age 85) 85 Years Old

ZANESVILLE: Jerry Myrl Bates, 85, of Duncan Falls passed away January 17, 2018 at Genesis Hospital with his family at his side. Jerry had resided at Cedar Hill Care Center for the last two years with his high school sweetheart and wife of 65 years, Freda (Warne) Bates. Born July 3, 1932 to the late Dallas and Georgia (Paisley) Bates, Jerry grew up in High Hill and was a 1950 graduate of Meigs High School. He was married on April 19, 1952 to Freda who survives him. Jerry served his country in the military from 1954-1956, He worked for Ohio Ferro Alloy in Philo, for 34 years and continued working, until his retirement, for the Muskingum County Highway Department from 1985-1995. In addition, Jerry served as a Wayne Township Trustee from 1996-2003.

 

Jerry served on the Meigs and Franklin Local School District Boards of Education, the Muskingum County Vocational Board of Education (now the Mid-East Career and Technology Centers Board of Education) and the Muskingum County Board of Education (now the Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center Board of Education).

 

Jerry was honored to be inducted onto the Franklin Local School District Citizens Wall of Honor and the following year to the Alumni Wall of Honor.

He is a member of the Masonic Lodge in Duncan Falls and a former member of the Muskingum County Republican Central Committee. He attended the Duncan Falls Presbyterian Church.

 

Jerry cherished his community of Duncan Falls where he could be found often checking on his neighbors. He was a huge supporter of the Franklin Local School District and the Philo “Electrics”. He was an avid fan for many years attending hundreds of sporting events. He also loved his Ohio State “Buckeyes”, gardening, his beautiful lawn, helping others and time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two children, Cindy (Sam) Paul and Karen (Dan) Vincent, three grandchildren, Joshua (Melissa) Paul, Corey (Tiffany) Paul and Travis Paul, eight great-grandchildren, (Dakota, Amber, Emily, Greg, Ray, Spencer, Mady and Kenzie), brother, Dana (Sue) Bates, sister in laws, Rose Marie Bates, Shirley Carpenter, Mildred Warne Shuster and many special nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Ronald Bates, father and mother in law, William and Jennie Warne, brother in law, Ed Warne and sister in law, Janet Bates.

 

The family wishes to express their heart felt gratitude to the nurses, staff, and physicians at Genesis and especially the Cedar Hill Care Center staff for their kind and loving care of their father.

 

Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Farus Funeral Home, 383 Main St. Duncan Falls where Masonic Lodge service will be held at 5:45 pm, Friday.  Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Darla Revennaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Duncan Falls Cemetery, with full Military Honors provided by VFW Post # 1058 and American Legion Post #29.
