Alice V. Gates

April 9, 1933 ~ October 27, 2014 (age 81) 81 Years Old

Alice V. Gates, 81, of New Concord passed away in the loving presence of her family while in the care of the Beckett House on Monday, October 27th. She was born on April 9th, 1933 in Byesville, Ohio to the late John and Leota Allen. Alice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she was dedicated to bettering her community. She was a graduate of Byesville High School, and a member of the New Concord United Methodist Church.
Alice was an avid reader, enjoying romance and inspirational literature, but she would happily read any book she came across. She enjoyed shopping, had a sweet tooth, and was an amazing cook and baker. Whether it was a stew, cabbage rolls, or pork chops her meals were always mouthwatering and amazing. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Jack and Jill Mother’s Club, and the Miriam Circle.
She worked a variety of places throughout her life including, General Telephone, Guernsey Memorial Hospital, and eventually retiring from Muskingum University. She also volunteered her time to work at the Gift Shop at Good Samaritan Hospital.
She is preceded by her husband, Charles Gates, and her sister, Sarah Chapman, and her Step-father, Jim McWilliams. Alice leaves to cherish her memory her four children, Kirk (Teresa) Gates, Christine (Rick) White, Brent (Julie Paden) Gates, and Amy (Erik) Jacobson. She will be deeply missed by her 12 grandchildren, Jennifer (Chad) Wycoff, Ashley (Jason) Bennett, Jessica (James) Grandey, Nathan (Sarah) White, Anna (Justin) Papania, Clint Gates, Lauren Jacobson, Kelsey (Talon Thomas) Paden, Jacob Gates, Lindsey Jacobson, Haley Jacobson, and Hanna Jacobson, as well was four great-grandchildren, Logan and Evan Wycoff, and Ayla and Lainey Grandey. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Edna Gilcher as well as a host of family, friends, and former co-workers.
Calling hours for Alice will be held at the Farus Funeral Home of New Concord from 6-8PM on Wednesday, October 29th. Services will be held at the New Concord United Methodist Church, 20 East High Street, on Thursday, October 30th, where friends and family may gather from 10am to Noon, with services starting promptly at 12. Rev. Karen Graham will officiate Alice’s service, and burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the care and compassion that Alice received at the Beckett House, as well as from Genesis Hospice. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to either the New Concord United Methodist Church or Genesis Hospice, 713 Forest Ave., Zanesville, Ohio 43701.
