Welcome to the memorial page for

Lloyd E. Myers

September 14, 1921 ~ April 23, 2017 (age 95) 95 Years Old

Lloyd Earl Myers, 95, of Groton, CT, passed away on November 9, 2016, at the Fairview Nursing Home. He was born Sept. 14, 1921 in Waterford, Ohio, as an only child of William and Edella Myers. His home was on a farm just outside of Waterford, Ohio. Lloyd’s mother passed away when he was only three years old; his father passed away when he was nine. He was reared in his mother’s brother’s home following the death of his father.

When Lloyd was seventeen he married Norma Wainwright of Watertown Township, Ohio. At first he and his new bride tried farming on his parents’ farm, but a rabid dog attacked the cattle and all of the farm animals had to be destroyed. At that time WWII was in full swing, so Lloyd joined the Navy and was sent to war in the Pacific.

After the war Lloyd and Norma decided to venture into the gasoline filling station business located in Philo, Ohio. Lloyd and Norma ran the station for about four years, and then decided to try the grocery business. They had a grocery store in Philo from the early 1950s until the early 70s. During that time Lloyd regularly drove a school bus for Franklin Local Schools. He also was a volunteer fireman for the Harrison Township Fire Department. He rose through the ranks of the fire department, serving as a captain and eventually as chief of the department. In the early 70s Lloyd and Norma decided that their small grocery store could no longer compete with bigger supermarkets. Norma finished her schooling and moved on to become the Food Service Director of Franklin Local Schools. Lloyd drove trucks for Putnam Trucking and then became a service and parts manager at various local auto dealerships.

Lloyd and Norma celebrated their 75th anniversary on July 9, 2014, a few months before Norma passed. Lloyd then moved from Ohio to Connecticut where his son Don lives. He lived in Connecticut for 25 months before his recent passing (11/09/16). Lloyd was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, was a Mason, a Veteran of the Navy, an honored Harrison Township of Ohio fireman, and a member of the Methodist Church of Philo, Ohio.

Lloyd is survived by his daughter, Virginia Williams of North Canton, Ohio, and his son Don Myers (Terri) of North Stonington, Connecticut. Lloyd had five grandchildren: Kara Fischback (Doug) of Rocky River, OH, Keely Kalb of North Canton, OH, Christopher Myers (Amy) of Gales Ferry, CT, Michael Myers of New London, CT, and Jonathan Myers (Mary Ann) of Gilford, NH. Lloyd had seven great grandchildren: Tyler Kalb, Jules Myers, Nicholas Myers, Lauren Myers, Kendall Myers, Marisa Myers, and Dylan Myers.

A Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Farus Funeral Home of Duncan Falls.  Military Honors will be performed at 4 PM by the Zanesville VFW Post #1058 at the Funeral Home.  He will be laid to rest in Waterford Cemetery, April 29, 2017 at 10 AM.
